beer-in-ice_rgbFULTON — City of Fulton voters have approved the sale of beer and liquor inside the city limits.

Aldermen will now have to set guidelines and regulations for the alcohol sales to determine when and where it can be sold.

Yesterday, voters in Fulton had to decide whether to legalize the sale of beer and light wine. Complete, but unofficial, results show that referendum passing with 697 votes for it and 440 against it.

Voters also voted on the sale of liquor. That passed as well. Complete, but unofficial, results for liquor sales show 683 for liquor sales and 452 against.

A handful of affidavit ballots are still be counted. The results are not expected to change.

“We had a great turnout,” said Mayor Lynne Weatherford. “The people of Fulton have spoken. I trust our board will make the right decisions as far as the rules and regulations are concerned.”

Proponents of alcohol argue that it brings in additional sales taxes. Opponents argue it brings crime and other problems.

Weatherford has said she believes aldermen won’t allow a lot of overt advertising of beer and liquors, keeping the city to its current aesthetic.

Fulton is the latest in a string of dry municipalities to face a mandated vote on alcohol sales. In tight elections, voters in Pontotoc recently voted in favor of legalizing the sale of beer, light wine and liquor, while voters in Amory decided against both.
